Detroit Lions restructure offensive line with Sewell move

The Detroit Lions are implementing several changes to their offensive line following a regression in the 2025 season. A primary move involves transitioning Penei Sewell from right tackle to left tackle to replace Taylor Decker. Experts, including Lions Radio Network reporter T.J. Lang, suggest Sewell may become even more dominant in the left tackle position, noting his collegiate experience at that spot.

To fill the void at right tackle, rookie first-round pick Blake Miller is considered the heavy favorite to win the starting job. Miller has reportedly displayed the “maturity and know-how” expected of a veteran. Meanwhile, the center position is expected to be handled by free agent signing Cade Mays, allowing 2025 second-rounder Tate Ratledge to remain at right guard.

The competition for the starting left guard position remains unsettled. Christian Mahogany is currently viewed as a favorite for the role due to his familiarity with the system, despite struggling with pass-blocking grades and injury issues in the previous season. Mahogany faces competition from free agent Ben Bartch, fifth-round pick Miles Frazier, and trade acquisition Juice Scruggs.
