Detroit Lions defense faces scrutiny amid injury crisis

The Detroit Lions are facing significant defensive challenges early in the 2026 NFL season, characterized by high yardage allowed and a depleted secondary. Head coach Dan Campbell has publicly defended defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard despite criticism following poor performances against the Saints and Bills.

The team's defensive struggles are compounded by critical injuries. Safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph remain on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. While Branch is nearing a return from a torn Achilles, Joseph continues to deal with a chronic knee issue. Campbell noted that neither player is expected to practice this week, leaving the secondary shorthanded.

To address these roster gaps, General Manager Brad Holmes has made several moves. The Lions signed safety Bishop Fitzgerald from the Pittsburgh Steelers' practice squad and added veteran Jalen Mills to their own practice squad. These additions follow the news that cornerback Avonte Maddox will miss the remainder of the season due to a foot injury.
