Detroit Lions see breakout defensive performances from Wonnum and Hutchinson
The Detroit Lions are seeing significant defensive production from free-agent addition D. J. Wonnum through the first five games of the 2026 NFL season. Wonnum has recorded five sacks, marking his third-best career total, and has contributed 11 pressures.
Head coach Dan Campbell noted that Wonnum’s performance is creating a more dangerous defensive line by providing a lethal complement to star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson. Hutchinson, who has four sacks and 33 pressures, stated that Wonnum’s ability to win individual matchups forces opposing teams to adjust their blocking schemes, which benefits the entire unit.
On the offensive side, running back Jahmyr Gibbs has emerged as a key performer. Following the trade of David Montgomery, Gibbs has taken on a primary role, currently ranking fourth in the league in rushing and maintaining a pace for a career-high in receptions.
