Detroit Lions overhaul staff and roster ahead of 2026 NFL season

The Detroit Lions entered the 2026 offseason with heightened expectations after a disappointing 2025 campaign. Head coach Dan Campbell, under pressure from former players, added new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing and passing‑game coordinator Mike Kafka to address the unit that struggled last year. Veteran quarterback Jared Goff, running back Jahmyr Gibbs and tight end Sam LaPorta are expected to lead the offense under the revamped scheme.

Defensively, the Lions’ secondary faces uncertainty. Free‑agency departure of corner Amik Robertson and the release of Terrion Arnold following serious criminal charges left the unit thin. Injuries to Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph compounded the concerns. Rookie corner Ennis Rakestraw Jr., who missed the entire 2025 season due to injury, entered training camp seeking a roster spot, competing with Rock Ya‑Sin and Roger McCreary. The team hopes the changes will reverse the decline and return the Lions to playoff contention.
