Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta cleared for training camp, urges natural grass at Ford Field

Tight end Sam LaPorta has been fully medically cleared to participate in the Detroit Lions’ upcoming training camp after recovering from a microdiscectomy performed to repair a herniated disc. The 25‑year‑old, a key target for quarterback Jared Goff, posted 40 catches for 489 yards and three touchdowns last season and is set to become a free agent in March 2026.

LaPorta has also joined other NFL players in calling for Ford Field’s artificial turf to be replaced with natural grass. He posted an Instagram story reading “WHY CAN’T WE HAVE THIS TOO” alongside footage of a grass field being mowed, noting that the synthetic surface contributed to a knee injury early in his career. The Lions’ coach Dan Campbell said the organization is “committed” to finding the best playing surface and will explore options for higher‑rated turf.

The request follows recent discussions about natural‑grass installations at NFL stadiums for the World Cup, with players such as San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle also advocating for permanent grass fields.
