Detroit Pistons offer Jalen Duren $200 million with weight clause
Contract negotiations between the Detroit Pistons and All-NBA center Jalen Duren have reportedly stalled due to an unusual weight clause included in the team’s latest offer. The Pistons have proposed a five-year, $200 million fully guaranteed contract, but the deal includes a requirement for the 22-year-old to undergo monthly weigh-ins.
According to reports from The Athletic, the Pistons' management believes Duren’s conditioning may have impacted his performance during the team’s second-round playoff loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. This assessment has reportedly caused significant friction, as Duren and his representatives were surprised by the suggestion that his weight was a factor in his postseason struggles.
Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon has prior experience with such stipulations, having worked in the New Orleans Pelicans' front office when they implemented similar weight and body-fat requirements for Zion Williamson. While the weight clause is intended as an incentive rather than a mechanism to void the base salary, the demand has created a sense of distrust between the player and the organization. As the deadline for Duren to sign a qualifying offer approaches, the impasse has led to speculation regarding potential trades or Duren leaving in free agency.
