Detroit Pistons face contract stalemate with Jalen Duren

Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons have yet to reach an agreement on a new contract as the NBA offseason nears its conclusion. The 22-year-old center, coming off an All-Star season, remains the only All-NBA selection from the previous season without a current deal.

Analyst John Hollinger suggests a potential solution to the stalemate is a front-loaded contract that provides Duren with more immediate compensation. This approach could benefit the Pistons' salary cap planning, as the team is currently approximately $46 million below the tax line.

Resolving Duren's contract is viewed as a critical precursor to negotiations with Ausar Thompson. The Pistons need to establish Duren's financial impact on the books for 2028 and 2029 before finalizing cap strategies for Thompson's extension. While the negotiations have been drawn out, experts suggest a multi-year deal is the most likely outcome, as Duren has little incentive to accept a qualifying offer and the Pistons are unlikely to pursue a sign-and-trade.
