Jalen Duren skips Pistons training camp amid contract standoff
Detroit Pistons All-NBA center Jalen Duren is currently in a contract standoff with the franchise, leading him to skip the team’s media day and the start of training camp. Duren, a restricted free agent, has rejected a five-year, $200 million fully guaranteed contract offer.
A primary point of contention is reportedly a clause requiring monthly weight checks, which the Pistons implemented due to concerns regarding his mobility and performance during the playoffs. Duren’s representatives have also expressed feelings of being “disrespected” by the negotiation process, particularly following the recent extension of teammate Ausar Thompson.
Duren faces a deadline this Thursday to sign a one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer. If he signs, he remains with the Pistons for the upcoming season but will become an unrestricted free agent next summer. Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon stated that Duren will be a “huge part of the team” regardless of his decision, though he noted he has not spoken directly with the player this summer.
As the stalemate continues, several teams have shown interest in the 22-year-old center. The Sacramento Kings and Milwaukee Bucks have been linked to him, while the Toronto Raptors have been mentioned in hypothetical trade scenarios. The Pistons have reportedly rejected sign-and-trade proposals as they aim to retain the player long-term.
