Detroit Public Schools implements health hubs and attendance incentives

The Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) is implementing multiple strategies to combat chronic absenteeism and support student success. One initiative involves the launch of health hubs at 10 schools. These wellness centers provide students and families with essential resources, including school supplies, hygiene products, clothing, and household items. The hubs also serve as a link to external services such as food banks, dental care, eye exams, and laundry facilities.

Additionally, the district is utilizing financial incentives through the ‘Perfect Attendance Pays’ program. Under this initiative, eligible high school students can receive $100 Visa gift cards for perfect attendance during five-day cycles, with the potential to earn up to $1,000 over 10 weeks. Middle school students are eligible for $50 per week.

The district aims to reduce its chronic absenteeism rate to 42.9 percent by 2027, following rates of 54 percent in April 2026 and 64 percent during the 2023-2024 school year.
