Detroit Red Wings focus on offensive reconstruction and defensive execution

Detroit Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan and player Andrew Copp have outlined strategies to address offensive and defensive challenges for the upcoming season. Following the departure of Patrick Kane, McLellan noted that Kane’s absence significantly impacts Alex DeBrincat, estimating that Kane was involved in approximately 32 to 36 percent of DeBrincat’s goals.

To mitigate this loss, the team plans to keep Andrew Copp alongside DeBrincat. While Copp does not offer the same puck-handling or playmaking style as Kane, McLellan believes his ability to win battles, retrieve pucks, and occupy defenders will provide the necessary support for DeBrincat to operate effectively.

On the defensive side, the team is focusing on improved execution and structure. Copp emphasized that a stronger defensive presence and harder checking could create more opportunities for odd-man rushes and offensive entries. McLellan stressed the importance of consistency, noting that the team must avoid giving up goals easily and maintain their defensive commitment throughout the season.
