Detroit Red Wings’ rebuild falters under Steve Yzerman and Ken Holland

Former general manager Steve Yzerman stepped down after seven seasons, ending a rebuilding plan that many analysts say failed to restore the Detroit Red Wings to playoff contention. Critics point to questionable trades, overpaid free‑agent contracts and draft choices that did not yield impact, such as the overpaying of Victor Arvidsson and the trade of a high‑draft pick for a lower one.

Ken Holland, Yzerman’s predecessor, also faces blame for lingering missteps that accelerated the team’s decline after a long period of success. While the Red Wings remained a playoff presence from 2010 to 2016, the loss of veteran talent, limited roster turnover and a reluctance to overhaul the roster contributed to a steady slide down the standings.
