Detroit Tigers acquire infielder Tsung-Che Cheng from Red Sox

The Detroit Tigers have acquired infielder Tsung-Che Cheng from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for cash considerations. The 25-year-old left-handed hitter provides the Tigers with additional depth in the middle infield, as he is capable of playing shortstop, second base, and third base.

Cheng brings Major League experience to Detroit, having appeared in 14 games with the Red Sox in 2026 and three games with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2025. While he has shown improvement in reducing his strikeout rate, he maintains a high swing-and-miss frequency. In his 2026 Triple-A campaign, he hit .241 with eight home runs and 30 RBIs.

The acquisition addresses depth concerns noted by Tigers President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris. Because Cheng no longer has minor league options, he will occupy a spot on the Tigers' 40-man roster and will likely be included on the Major League roster.
