Detroit catcher Eduardo Valencia homers in first MLB at‑bat

Twenty‑six‑year‑old Venezuelan catcher Eduardo Valencia was called up from Triple‑A Toledo and pinch‑hit in the seventh inning of Detroit's July 9 game against the Oakland Athletics. He launched a 425‑foot home run to center field, becoming the 10th Tiger and the fifth Venezuelan to homer in a player's first major‑league at‑bat. The shot gave Detroit a 4‑1 win, completing a series sweep and the team's fifth consecutive victory, moving the Tigers within 4½ games of the AL Central lead. Pitcher Framber Valdez threw seven strong innings, recording nine strikeouts and allowing one run. Teammates Jake Rogers and Zach McKinstry also homered for Detroit.
