Detroit Tigers defeat Minnesota Twins 5-4 in series opener

The Detroit Tigers defeated the Minnesota Twins 5-4 in the series opener at Comerica Park. Riley Greene contributed three hits, including a two-run home run, while rookie Kevin McGonigle hit a solo shot to tie the game in the first inning. Tigers starter Troy Melton pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs, while relievers held the Twins to a single hit in the final innings. Kenley Jansen secured his 18th save of the season in the ninth inning.

Kevin McGonigle is making a historic rookie season, becoming one of only ten MLB players in the last 90 years to record both 85 walks and 88 runs scored in a single rookie campaign. He is currently a leading candidate for the American League Rookie of the Year award.

The Twins, currently 4.5 games out of a playoff spot, saw Trevor Larnach hit a solo home run during the contest. Minnesota's Joe Ryan pitched four innings in his return from the injured list.
