Deurne jeweler assaulted during attempted burglary

A jeweler in Deurne, Martijn van Hooff, was assaulted during an attempted burglary at his shop in the early hours of a Wednesday. Four masked individuals attempted to break into the store using professional equipment, including a hydraulic spreader typically used by fire departments, to force open the security shutter.

Van Hooff, who lives above the shop, was awakened by the alarm and confronted the intruders. During the encounter, two of the suspects struck him with a steel pipe. Despite the assault, Van Hooff used his mobile phone to film the suspects and their vehicle to assist with the investigation. The thieves fled the scene after realizing the alarm had been triggered and the owner was present. The footage has been handed over to the police, who have declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.
