Berlin‑Hamburg rail line faces additional night closures in August‑September
The Deutsche Bahn will close the newly renovated Berlin‑Hamburg high‑speed line for several nights in August and September to correct residual defects discovered after the line returned to full operation in June. Planned closures are the nights of 15‑16 August and 29‑30 August, with further single‑night works scheduled for September. All works are timed outside the main travel season; affected long‑distance and freight trains will be rerouted and regional services will be replaced by buses.
The closure follows a general overhaul that ran from August 2025 to June 2026, during which about 81 km of track, 44 switches and two major bridges were renewed, and four stations modernised. The project, costing roughly €300 million, was delayed by about one and a half months because of early‑year frost. The line now supports speeds up to 230 km/h, pending final acceptance of the new signalling and infrastructure.
The Berlin‑Hamburg corridor is a key north‑south artery for passenger and freight traffic, linking the Hamburg port with the German hinterland. The additional night works aim to ensure long‑term reliability before a larger 2029 refurbishment programme.
