Deutsche Bahn implements nationwide alcohol ban at train stations
Deutsche Bahn has implemented a nationwide ban on alcohol consumption across approximately 5,700 train stations in Germany, effective October 15, 2026. The policy, which applies to station buildings, platforms, and access areas, aims to enhance passenger safety and cleanliness while reducing conflicts and litter.
While consumption in public areas is prohibited, several exceptions remain. Travelers are permitted to carry unopened, sealed alcoholic beverages in their luggage or shopping bags. Furthermore, alcohol consumption is still allowed within station restaurants, cafes, and catering establishments, as well as on trains, including long-distance board bistros.
Security personnel are authorized to enforce the ban by issuing warnings or place bans. Repeated violations may result in a permanent ban from the premises. The decision follows successful trials at major hubs like Cologne, Munich, and Hamburg, and was motivated in part by a violent incident involving an intoxicated passenger. A recent survey indicated that nearly 80% of respondents support the measure.
