Rail infrastructure maintenance causes widespread transport disruptions
Rail infrastructure projects and maintenance are causing widespread disruptions across Germany and Austria. In Bavaria, DB InfraGO has reversed plans to cut regional train connections between Augsburg and Munich starting in 2028, following political pressure and a public petition. However, commuters still face localized disruptions, including night-time replacement bus services on the Augsburg–Aichach–Ingolstadt route and construction-related diversions in Straubing.
In the Ruhr region, major construction at the Kaiserberg motorway junction in Duisburg has halted long-distance and regional rail services between Duisburg, Essen, and Oberhausen, forcing travelers to use buses or take significant detours via Wuppertal. Additionally, the Brandleitetunnel in the Thuringian Forest has reopened following three months of safety upgrades.
In Austria, ASFINAG has announced night-time tunnel closures on the A9 Pyhrn motorway for cleaning and repairs in the Gleinalm and Plabutsch tunnels. Meanwhile, in the Rhine region, while a major corridor renovation between Koblenz and Mainz has been postponed to 2031, ongoing station modernizations continue to impact service.
Other local transport updates include the resumption of ferry services in Kaub following low water levels and various bus line diversions due to construction in Straubing.
