Deutsche Bahn implements major rail upgrades in Saxony

Extensive railway construction projects are causing significant disruptions to rail services in Saxony and Thuringia. The Leipzig–Zwickau line, specifically near the Gößnitz railway junction, is closed from Monday until the timetable change in December.

Deutsche Bahn is consolidating various works on the Saxony-Franconia Magistrale to modernize the route. These upgrades aim to increase train speeds to 160 km/h and expand capacity for regional freight traffic. The project includes renewing tracks and switches, upgrading overhead lines, and installing three new bridges between Gößnitz and Werdau.

Replacement bus services are operating between Gößnitz and Zwickau, with additional construction phases affecting connections from Altenburg to Zwickau. Furthermore, modernization efforts are underway at Werdau station, which will include the construction of two 750-meter-long freight overtaking tracks and new signaling systems to improve operational efficiency.
