Deutsche Bahn introduces heatwave schedule rule to curb rail disruptions

DB InfraGO, the infrastructure arm of Deutsche Bahn, has implemented a new regulation allowing railway operators to reduce services when temperatures rise above 35 °C. The rule is intended to increase operational stability, minimise short‑term outages and provide passengers with earlier information about timetable changes.

The first nationwide application runs from 30 July to 6 August 2026. In the states of North Rhine‑Westphalia, Rhineland‑Palatinate and Saarland the rule starts on 29 July, with additional early activation on 29 July in Baden‑Württemberg, Hesse and other regions. Operators may adjust timetables in advance of an announced heatwave, deciding themselves which services to curtail while retaining the ability to maintain freight and long‑distance traffic.

DB InfraGO cites the late‑June heatwave, which caused widespread delays, short‑term cancellations and freight impacts, as the trigger for the measure. Chairman Philipp Nagl said the new approach creates more operational reserves, improves planning for staff and rolling stock and offers clearer communication to travellers during extreme weather.
