Deutsche Bahn faces punctuality and safety challenges

Deutsche Bahn is addressing several operational issues, including low punctuality and safety concerns within its network. In October, long-distance train punctuality stood at 56.2 percent, which, while a slight improvement from September, remains below the company’s annual target of 60 percent. The company attributed these delays to construction sites at traffic hubs and frequent technical malfunctions.

To address punctuality, an expert commission has begun investigating whether reducing the frequency of trains could create a more robust and reliable schedule. While some experts suggest thinning out traffic to improve reliability, labor unions have expressed opposition to such measures.

Separately, the Düsseldorf-based transport company Rheinbahn is implementing new safety measures following independent investigations into two serious tram accidents in Holthausen and at Berliner Allee. Reports from TÜV Rheinland, Deloitte, and Human Factor Consulting identified a combination of technical, human, and organizational factors as contributing to the incidents. Rheinbahn has responded by introducing technical safeguards, revising driver training, and restructuring operational management to improve risk assessment and safety standards.
