Deutsche Bahn faces criticism over infrastructure and renovation failures
Deutsche Bahn is facing significant operational and structural challenges. Philipp Nagl, head of the infrastructure division DB Infrago, reported a 40 percent increase in delays caused by faulty infrastructure in 2026, citing extreme weather conditions as a primary driver. Punctuality for long-distance travel has dropped significantly, with rates falling below 55 percent.
Simultaneously, the German Federal Court of Auditors (Bundesrechnungshof) has issued a report criticizing the effectiveness of the railway's corridor renovation strategy. The auditors stated that previous economic feasibility studies were ‘faulty and not reliable’ and noted that the DB InfraGO division has largely failed to meet its promises. The report highlights grave developments in the initial renovation phases, prompting calls for more consistent oversight and adjustments.
In response to these issues, the Federal Ministry of Transport has acknowledged existing deficits in success control and economic assessments. Due to these complications, the government and the railway have announced that significantly fewer routes will be renovated over the next five years than originally planned, with service being restored to tracks only gradually following construction.
