Germany rail network undergoes extensive modernization and repairs

Germany's rail network is undergoing extensive modernization and facing operational challenges. Deutsche Bahn reported that in the first half of 2026, approximately one in twelve long-distance trains were cancelled or partially cancelled, representing an eight percent disruption rate. In response, political groups have called for increased reserve trains and personnel to mitigate the domino effect of delays.

Simultaneously, widespread infrastructure projects are causing significant service disruptions across various regions. Major works include the renovation of the right-bank line between Wiesbaden and North Rhine-Westphalia, involving a 1.6 billion euro investment to replace tracks, bridges, and signals. In Bavaria, construction between Munich and Buchloe is necessitating bus replacements for S-Bahn and regional services. Other notable projects include the modernization of historic Saale bridges near Halle and extensive bridge repairs on the Volmetalbahn between Lüdenscheid and Hagen.

Regional lines are also seeing scheduled closures. The Brockenbahn in the Harz mountains will suspend service to the summit from late August through mid-September due to track work, while the Kempten-Lindau line faces several weeks of disruptions and bus replacements starting in September. These various maintenance efforts aim to improve long-term reliability and safety despite the immediate impact on commuters and travelers.
