Deutsche Bahn restores service after nationwide GSM‑R outage

A failure of the GSM‑R digital train radio system caused a nationwide halt to Deutsche Bahn operations for about two hours on Tuesday night, affecting thousands of passengers. Service began to resume in Bavaria early Wednesday, with trains in Munich running again by around 00:30 and most regional and long‑distance services around Augsburg restarting after the overnight disruption. Operators worked to reposition rolling stock, some passengers were transferred by taxi, and diesel refuelling was required for certain regional units. While a few connections were cancelled or delayed, the majority of services were listed as on time once operations resumed.

The outage highlighted the aging 2G‑based GSM‑R infrastructure, which is slated for replacement by the 5G‑based FRMCS system in the coming years.
