Germany's Rail Network Undergoes Major Renovations Amid Aging Bridges

Germany’s rail infrastructure is confronting extensive deterioration, prompting large‑scale modernization efforts. On the Ruhr‑Siegel line between Siegen and Hagen, more than 150 million EUR is being invested to rebuild three bridges, replace 23 km of track and 41 switches, and carry out over 100 individual measures. The works, scheduled through December, will lead to prolonged service interruptions, with regional trains and the Dortmund‑Siegerland Express suspended for months and replacement bus services adding up to an hour to journeys. Daily passenger numbers on the affected sections range from 2,000 to 5,500, and freight traffic is also impacted.

The situation reflects a broader challenge across Germany, where ageing bridges, outdated rails and insufficient maintenance are hampering reliability and increasing costs for businesses. Industry experts cite the need for digital asset data, predictive maintenance and tighter coordination between operators such as Deutsche Bahn and technology providers like Siemens Mobility to improve lifecycle management and avoid further disruptions.
