Deutsche Bahn faces delays and major track closures
Deutsche Bahn is grappling with significant service disruptions and declining punctuality due to extensive infrastructure renovations and aging equipment. Philipp Nagl, CEO of DB InfraGO, reported a 40 percent increase in delays caused by infrastructure failures in 2026, citing extreme weather conditions that damaged switches, overhead lines, and signal boxes.
Major construction projects are causing widespread closures. In Hamburg, work on the Elbe bridges will limit regional train capacity for four weeks, forcing passengers to use the S-Bahn. In Bavaria, a six-week full closure of the high-speed line between Nuremberg and Ingolstadt is scheduled from late October to mid-December 2026 to facilitate a 70 million euro renovation.
Despite these efforts to modernize the network, long-distance punctuality has dropped from 64 percent in 2023 to approximately 60 percent in 2025. Nagl anticipates that a meaningful improvement in reliability will not be felt until major renovations, such as the Hamburg-Hannover route, are completed around 2029.
