Deutsche Bahn scales back annual rail renovation schedule
Deutsche Bahn is revising its general renovation plan for its rail network, signaling that major infrastructure upgrades will take longer than originally projected. Railway Chief Evelyn Palla announced that the company will reduce the number of large-scale corridor renovations from four per year to two, with a maximum of three in cases of extreme technical necessity.
The decision stems from the deteriorating state of the infrastructure and the logistical challenges of managing multiple full-track closures simultaneously. The original goal was to complete renovations on approximately 40 key routes by 2036, but this new strategy may push completion dates beyond that timeframe.
The shift has raised concerns among regional leaders. In Saarland, Transport Minister Petra Berg warned that the delay could lead to a permanent investment backlog, specifically citing the high-speed line between Ludwigshafen and Forbach, which was scheduled for major work in 2028 and 2029.
Additionally, DB InfraGO is updating plans for the Rhine-Ruhr Express (RRX) expansion between Düsseldorf and Duisburg. These revisions include increasing the height of noise protection walls to five meters to better protect approximately 1,500 homes from noise pollution.
