Deutsche Bahn introduces permanent family ticket amid infrastructure challenges

Deutsche Bahn is introducing a permanent 'Familienticket' (family ticket) starting November 1, following high demand during the summer holidays. The ticket costs 99.99 euros for a round trip for up to five people, including ICE seat reservations. Sales are scheduled to begin on October 26.

Despite this new offering, Bahn CEO Evelyn Palla warned that significant improvements in punctuality will not happen quickly. She noted that much of the rail infrastructure is aging and prone to failure, particularly during extreme heat. Palla stated that modernizing the network will be a process lasting at least ten years.

In related infrastructure news, DB InfraGo plans to request a 7.9 percent average increase in track access charges for 2027, with freight traffic seeing the highest rise at 12.9 percent. Additionally, major construction projects are impacting various regions, including extensive closures in the Munich area and a 14-month shutdown of the Berlin-Lehrte east-west connection through December 2027.
