German Transport Network Faces Summer Disruptions

The Bavarian Eisenbahngesellschaft reported that service quality in the state’s regional rail remained stable in 2025, with 25 of 30 networks meeting or exceeding minimum standards and the Kahlgrund line scoring a perfect 100 points. In southern Germany, Munich’s S5 line will run by bus only to Aying until mid‑October while bridge work in Großhelfendorf is carried out. Across the country, extensive road works and holiday traffic have produced jams of up to 19 kilometres on the A7, A1, A20 and other autobahns heading to the Baltic and North Sea coasts. Rail construction also forces bus replacements on several routes: the RB 110 line around Leipzig, Stuttgart’s U13 line, and a short‑term SEV between Halle and Berga‑Kelbra. In Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern, record passenger demand left 432 travellers stranded on overcrowded regional trains; the state responded by adding more than 1.6 million train kilometres and introducing hourly services on key corridors. The passenger association Pro Bahn called for guaranteed alternatives such as buses or vouchers for those left behind. Additional projects include noise‑protection work on the Brenner‑Nordzulauf and road closures on the Bogenbridge and in the Saale‑Orla‑Kreis.
