Deutsche Bank appointed as yuan clearing bank in the EU
Deutsche Bank has been appointed by China as a clearing bank for the renminbi (yuan) within the European Union. This marks the first time a European financial institution has received such a designation.
The bank will facilitate end-to-end processing, clearing, and settlement for cross-border RMB transactions for European companies and financial institutions. By acting as a local bridge to Chinese payment systems, the move provides direct access to China’s financial system, capital markets, and liquidity infrastructure, which is expected to simplify trade and investment flows.
Alexander von zur Muehlen, a board member at Deutsche Bank, stated that the measure “strengthens China-Europe financial connectivity.” This development is part of broader Chinese initiatives to internationalize the yuan and reduce global reliance on the US dollar-dominated payment system. This follows similar recent efforts, such as the designation of Standard Bank and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China as renminbi clearing banks for 19 African nations.
