Deutsche Bundesbank seeks new Frankfurt headquarters

The Deutsche Bundesbank has launched a Europe-wide tender to find a new headquarters in Frankfurt. The central bank is seeking a turnkey solution, which could be a new build or a fully renovated existing property, including land within the city limits. The goal is to award the contract by the end of 2027.

The decision follows the abandonment of plans to renovate the bank's current brutalist headquarters in northwest Frankfurt. A profitability study indicated that purchasing a new site would be significantly more cost-effective than the previous renovation project, which was estimated by the German Court of Auditors to cost approximately 4.6 billion euros.

The new facility is expected to accommodate roughly 2,500 workstations and provide 15,000 square meters of functional and technical space. Key selection criteria include price, building quality, location, and accessibility via public transport.

While the bank moves, the current historic building will remain the site for the bank's money museum and the storage of Germany's gold reserves, totaling 1,710 tonnes. The former headquarters is slated to eventually house the European School of Frankfurt.
