Deutsche Lufthansa faces union lawsuit over pilots' work email access

The pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit has filed a complaint with the Cologne Labour Court against Deutsche Lufthansa AG. The suit seeks a legal right to contact Lufthansa pilots through their official e‑mail addresses for membership recruitment, arguing that the digital communication channel is essential because pilots are frequently away from the cockpit. Union representative Oliver Löwe said, "The service e‑mail is today the central communication medium between employer and employees within the workforce." Lufthansa has refused both to permit the union to use the e‑mail system and to forward a union‑generated message on its behalf. The case invokes Article 9 (3) of the German Basic Law on coalition freedom and aims to clarify how this constitutional right applies in an increasingly digital work environment.
