Deutsche Oper Berlin premieres controversial Wagner production

The Deutsche Oper Berlin recently premiered a new production of Richard Wagner’s ‘Der fliegende Holländer’ (The Flying Dutchman), directed by Milo Rau. The production has drawn significant criticism for its attempt to link the opera’s plot to German-Israeli history.

In this interpretation, the characters are used as allegories: the Dutchman represents German guilt, Daland represents the founding of the State of Israel, Senta represents Israel, and Erik represents the Palestinians. The staging includes spoken texts and video footage filmed in Israel, which critics have described as creating a sensory overload that detracts from the music.

Due to the sensitive nature of the themes, security measures including bag checks were implemented at the opera house entrance. Reviews have characterized the production as unsuccessful, noting that the allegorical assignments failed to function effectively within the narrative framework.
