Deutsche Post announces postage and service changes for 2027

Deutsche Post has announced significant changes to its pricing and service structure effective January 1, 2027, pending approval from the Federal Network Agency. Standard letter postage in Germany is set to rise by 20 cents, increasing from 95 cents to 1.15 euros. International standard letters will rise to 1.45 euros.

Nikola Hagleitner, board member for Post & Paket Deutschland, attributed the price increases to declining letter volumes alongside rising personnel, energy, and material costs. The company noted it invests approximately one billion euros annually into its network.

The update also introduces structural changes to mail categories. To better distinguish between documents and goods, standard and compact letters will be limited to heights of 0.5 cm and 1 cm, respectively, while large letters will expand to 3 cm in height and 1 kg in weight. For domestic parcels, tracking and liability up to 20 euros will be automatically included for shipments weighing up to one kilogram.

Historians note that these changes occur amid a long-term decline in mail volume, which fell from 30 billion items 25 years ago to an estimated 9 billion by 2025.
