Deutsche Post plans significant postage rate increases for 2027

Deutsche Post has announced plans to significantly increase postage rates starting January 1, 2027, pending approval from the Bundesnetzagentur. The cost of a standard letter is proposed to rise from 95 cents to 1.15 euros, representing an increase of approximately 21 percent.

Other mail products are also slated for price hikes. Postcards will increase to 1.15 euros, compact letters (up to 50g) will rise to 1.25 euros, large letters to 2.35 euros, and maxi letters to 5 euros. International standard letters are expected to cost 1.45 euros. Additionally, the company is seeking permission to increase prices for private customer parcels by nearly 11 percent.

Nikola Hagleitner, board member for Post and Parcel Germany, described the increases as “unvermeidbar” (unavoidable). She cited a long-term decline in mail volume—dropping from 16.9 billion items in 2005 to approximately 9.4 billion in 2025—alongside rising costs for personnel, energy, and materials. The company noted that it must continue to maintain a nationwide network of mailboxes and branches despite the shrinking volume of mail.
