Deutsche Telekom transitions 1.3 million copper phone lines to LTE
Deutsche Telekom is transitioning approximately 1.3 million traditional copper telephone connections to modern alternatives, including fiber, DSL, and mobile networks. To support customers who use their connection exclusively for voice calls, the company has introduced the 'Call Connect via Funk' telephone box.
This hardware allows existing landline telephones to connect to the network via 4G/LTE technology. The device requires a standard power outlet and does not require the user to insert a separate SIM card. Setup is automated and typically takes about 15 minutes, while existing phone numbers are preserved.
Telekom offers two specific voice-only tariffs without internet access: 'Call Basic via Funk' for 22.95 euros per month, which includes 120 free minutes, and 'Call Comfort via Funk' for 32.45 euros per month, which provides a landline flat rate. The hardware can be rented for 3.95 euros per month or purchased for a one-time fee of 99.99 euros.
Customers utilizing specialized equipment, such as home emergency call systems or alarm systems, are advised to verify compatibility with their service providers before the transition.
