Deutsche Welle to maintain Greek-language service

The Deutsche Welle (DW) Broadcasting Council has unanimously decided to continue its Greek-language service beyond January 1, 2027, reversing a previous decision to close the department. While the service will operate in a limited capacity as part of the broader ‘DW 2035’ restructuring plan, it will not be abolished.

Council President Karl Justen noted that the decision reflects the need to maintain an independent information presence in a rapidly changing world. The new structure aims to reduce operational costs through closer cooperation between European language departments and shared use of journalistic material. The reversal follows significant criticism in Greece regarding the initial decision to shutter the small editorial team.
