Deutscher Alpenverein reports mixed 2026 summer season

The German Alpine Club (DAV) has reported a mixed outcome for the 2026 summer season. While warm weather and low snow levels led to an early start and high demand—with overnight stays expected to reach or exceed 900,000—environmental challenges were significant.

Persistent drought caused water shortages at approximately one-third of DAV huts at various times. This has prompted calls for increased investment in larger water reservoirs, water-saving measures, and more climate-resilient infrastructure. In the Allgäu Alps, water scarcity was also noted at specific locations.

Additionally, the DAV addressed issues with bedbugs, noting that roughly 20 huts are affected annually. The association is working with local sections and hut keepers to strengthen prevention measures.
