Deutschkreutz prepares for mayoral election amid polling station controversy

The municipality of Deutschkreutz is preparing for a mayoral election on September 13, following a period of political transition. After the resignation of ÖVP Mayor Andreas Kacsits in April, SPÖ Vice Mayor Jürgen Hofer assumed interim leadership. Hofer is now running for the position, emphasizing a platform of reliability, transparency, and addressing long-standing issues such as school security, local finances, and regional tourism.

Controversy has arisen regarding voting logistics for the residents of Girm, a part of Deutschkreutz. Due to the sale of the former fire station, which previously served as a polling station, there will only be one polling location for the entire municipality. LBL candidate Manfred Kölly has criticized this lack of local access for Girm residents. However, Hofer dismissed the criticism as ‘skurril’ (bizarre), noting that the municipality does not own alternative buildings in Girm and that using local guesthouses for voting is not permitted. There are 2,988 eligible voters in the municipality.
