Deutschlandfunk to overhaul schedule, dropping daily specialist shows

Germany’s public broadcaster Deutschlandfunk (DLF) announced a comprehensive programme reform that will be implemented from 30 November. The plan eliminates most daily specialist magazines—including "Wirtschaft am Mittag", "Campus und Karriere", "Forschung aktuell", "Deutschland heute", "Mediasres" and "Büchermarkt"—and integrates the former editorial teams into larger information strands. New half‑hour, thematic background programmes will be produced and released as podcasts, and a new "Im Dialog" format aims to increase audience interaction.

The reform responds to changing media consumption patterns, financial pressure on public broadcasters and requirements of the new Media‑Change State Treaty. Scheduling will shift, with morning information slots starting at 6 a.m. instead of 5 a.m. and evening programmes beginning at 17 h. DLF’s culture head Matthias Gierth said, "Wir glauben an das Radio" and added, "Es gibt keine Alternative zu Reformen". While some staff express concerns, the broadcaster argues the changes are essential to keep its offerings viable in the digital age.
