Dev Kazanları Natural Pools in Turkey Face Environmental Damage and Safety Risks

The "Dev Kazanları" rock‑formed pools in the Tabak Deresi canyon near Salihli, Manisa, have become a popular tourist spot despite lacking proper infrastructure. An uncontrolled flow of visitors leaves plastic bottles, packaging and food waste, turning the area into a makeshift landfill. The slippery rocks, deep water and strong currents also cause frequent near‑drowning incidents, with several people falling from the waterfall each year.

Local officials and residents are demanding urgent measures: construction of safe walking paths, installation of waste bins, and clear signage warning of the swimming ban and the dangers of entering the water. They argue that such steps are essential to protect the unique geological heritage, which is part of a UNESCO Global Geopark, and to prevent further environmental degradation and loss of life.
