Devecser deputy mayor addresses controversial memorial

Hajnalka Nyárs, the independent deputy mayor of Devecser, has addressed the national controversy surrounding a wooden memorial erected to commemorate the Mohács disaster. The monument gained widespread attention and ridicule online due to its unusual shape, which many observers compared to phallic imagery.

Nyárs stated that she initiated the program, organized the implementation, and worked with the creator. While acknowledging that the resulting shape was not the intended design, she noted that the controversy has unexpectedly increased interest and tourism in Devecser. She emphasized that the community intends to fix the monument rather than treat the incident as a political scandal or tragedy, asserting that mistakes should be corrected rather than serving as a reason to stop future initiatives.
