Developer details Flutter-based video downloader app and Chrome extension

A developer has released Vidkap, a video downloader application for Android and a Chrome extension designed to identify and save web videos as playable files.

To handle complex streaming formats like HLS and DASH, which consist of numerous small segments rather than single MP4 links, the developer built a custom engine in Dart. This approach avoids bundling FFmpeg, which was chosen to reduce app size and provide greater control over features such as download progress, cancellation, and resuming.

The technical implementation uses a pipeline that parses manifests, performs parallel downloads with retry logic, and utilizes a demuxer to convert segments into a playable MP4 format. To ensure smooth performance, each download job runs in its own isolate, preventing the engine from interfering with the user interface.
