Jharkhand students protest recruitment exam irregularities
Student protesters in Jharkhand have entered their 23rd day of agitation, demanding reforms and transparency in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). The protesters, organized under the JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch, are calling for the cancellation of specific exams, including the JSSC CGL and certain JPSC sessions, and are demanding an independent investigation by the CBI or a panel of retired judges.
Demonstrators have intensified their tactics, announcing plans to burn effigies of Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi across 24 districts. They have also threatened to blockade the Chief Minister's official residence in Ranchi on August 20 to demand his resignation. Protesters have criticized Rahul Gandhi for providing what they term “hollow” assurances via phone calls without taking concrete action, and have urged the Congress party to withdraw its support from the JMM-led coalition government.
In response to the unrest, Chief Minister Hemant Soren stated that the government is committed to ensuring justice for job aspirants and will not allow the “paper leak mafia” to compromise their hard work. He promised impartial investigations into alleged irregularities. Meanwhile, student leader Devendra Nath Mahto has alleged police high-handedness, claiming he was manhandled by security forces while attempting to participate in a Tiranga Yatra.
