Deventer faces rising homelessness and drug nuisance

Deventer Mayor Ron König has reported increasing pressure on city livability due to a rise in homelessness and drug-related nuisance. König noted that individuals on the streets often exhibit incomprehensible behavior, creating a sense of insecurity, and that many addicts are unwilling to accept help.

The municipality has responded by opening a second night shelter to address the growing number of homeless individuals. However, König highlighted the complexity of the issue, noting that the housing shortage makes finding space difficult and that local neighborhoods often resist the establishment of new shelters. He also pointed out the significant financial burden on municipalities, stating that addiction costs the public more than 100,000 euros per year, and called for more support from the national government.
