Deveselu missile base: Lavrov calls target status a 'secret
During a press conference following the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov declined to clarify whether Romania and the Deveselu missile defense site remain potential military targets for Moscow. When asked by a Romanian journalist if the country is still on Russia's list of targets due to the American Aegis Ashore system, Lavrov responded, “That is a secret,” while laughing.
The Aegis Ashore facility in Deveselu, Romania, has been a point of contention between Russia and NATO since it became operational in May 2016. Moscow has historically argued that the system threatens Russian strategic security and could be used for offensive purposes. Conversely, NATO and the United States maintain that the installation is strictly defensive, designed to protect European territory from ballistic missile threats.
Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu responded to Lavrov's remarks by stating that Russia appears to be taking matters “less seriously” that are considered “extremely serious” by Romania. She emphasized the importance of maintaining a consolidated position within both NATO and the European Union.
