Devin Townsend releases progressive rock opera ‘The Moth’

Canadian metal musician Devin Townsend has released his latest project, a progressive rock opera titled ‘The Moth’. Described as a work involving over a decade of development, the 24-song album is a theatrical and orchestral production centered on the theme of self-acceptance.

The project features contributions from the North Netherlands Orchestra & Choir, orchestrators Joseph Stevenson and Niels Bye Nielsen, and guest musicians including Steve Vai and Anneke van Giersbergen. Townsend has used the metaphor of a moth—transforming from a caterpillar to a creature drawn to light—to represent the concept of emotional transformation.

In a collaborative video with Spitfire Audio, Joseph Stevenson provides a technical breakdown of the orchestral arrangements for the track ‘Orion’. Following the intensive production period, Townsend noted the necessity of taking time to recharge after years of relentless creative effort.
