Devlet Bahçeli issues challenge to Greece regarding security and alliances

Devlet Bahçeli, leader of Turkey's Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and a government partner to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has issued provocative statements regarding Greece's national security. During a speech to his party's parliamentary group, Bahçeli asserted that Greece cannot feel secure regardless of the alliances it forms, the agreements it signs, or the weaponry it acquires, unless it recognizes Turkey's rights and the sovereignty of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Bahçeli specifically addressed Athens' defense policy, stating that Turkey cannot be intimidated by Greek armament programs. He remarked, “If it is arming itself to terrorize us, let it not get that out of its mind: no power can terrorize us.” He further suggested that Greece should seek lasting peace by building friendly relations with its neighbors and stated that the country must “draw lessons from history.”

These remarks come amid heightened regional tensions involving the Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnection project and strengthening relations between Athens and Tel Aviv.
