Devographics report reveals developer burnout and career shifts
The State of Devs 2026 report by Devographics reveals a significant crisis within the global software development industry, characterized by widespread job insecurity, burnout, and mental health struggles. According to the survey, more than 25% of programmers anticipate leaving the profession entirely within the next five years. The data shows that approximately 25% of respondents have experienced a layoff during their careers, with nearly 10% losing their jobs in the nine months preceding the report.
Mental health metrics indicate a decline in professional well-being. Roughly two-thirds of participants reported feeling less motivated and more cynical than the previous year, while half reported symptoms such as severe exhaustion, concentration difficulties, and diminished productivity. The integration of artificial intelligence has also contributed to stress, with nearly half of those surveyed stating AI has had no positive impact on their mental state, citing cognitive overload and dependency as concerns.
Opinions on AI remain polarized; the report found a nearly even split, with 49% of developers holding positive views and 42% reporting negative perceptions. This tension exists alongside high adoption rates of automated tools in daily workflows.
