Devon animal attractions remain open during bluetongue outbreak

Animal attractions and zoos in Devon, including Paignton Zoo, Totnes Rare Breeds Farm, and The Big Sheep, remain open despite a bluetongue outbreak in the county. Since July 10, 304 cases have been diagnosed on local farms.

The virus, which is spread by biting midges, affects ruminants and camelids such as sheep, cattle, goats, deer, llamas, and alpacas. While sheep are the most severely impacted and the disease can cause fever, swelling, and death, officials note that humans cannot catch the virus and are safe around sick animals.

To mitigate risks, local attractions have implemented precautions and vaccinated high-risk animals. At Paignton Zoo, sheep and yaks have already been vaccinated, with plans to evaluate vaccination programs for other species including pigs, cattle, deer, goats, camels, and vicuna. The zoo is adhering to guidelines from the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) and coordinating with European colleagues.
